The First Khutbah
All praises are due to Allah, Lord of all the Worlds. Who has made the World an abode of effort and work, and made Paradise the reward for those who excel therein. And I bear witness, with every facet of my being, that there is nothing worthy of absolute love, adoration and worship, except Allah, the Uniquely One, having no competing second in that One-ness. And I bear witness that our Leader and Sayyid, our Prophet, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), is the perfect example of servanthood unto Allah, and is His sent Messenger unto the entirety of the created universe.
To Continue: I advise you, dutiful servants of Allah, and myself, to adhere to a heartfelt consciousness (Taqwa) of Allah. For He, the Most Gloriously Transcendent, states:
وَقِيلَ لِلَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا مَاذَا أَنْزَلَ رَبُّكُمْ قَالُوا خَيْرًا لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةٌ وَلَدَارُ الْآخِرَةِ خَيْرٌ وَلَنِعْمَ دَارُ الْمُتَّقِينَ
And it will be said to those who feared Allah , "What did your Lord send down?" They will say, "[That which is] good." For those who do good in this world is good; and the home of the Hereafter is better. And how excellent is the home of the righteous - [Qur'an:16:30]
Amongst the most common supplications that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would say is: اللَّهُمَّ آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً، وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
" Our Lord, grant us the good in this world and the good in the Hereafter and save us from the torment of Hell Fire." [Muslim]
In similar manner, the Prophet Moses (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also made supplication saying: وَاكْتُبْ لَنَا فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ
And decree for us in this world [that which is] good and [also] in the Hereafter [Qur'an:7:156]
In addition, this is the manner in which the Muslims have been recorded in the Qur'an as supplicating to their Lord, saying:
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
"Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."
Allah informs us that He answered their call, and further praised the supplication, stating:
أُولَئِكَ لَهُمْ نَصِيبٌ مِمَّا كَسَبُوا وَاللَّهُ سَرِيعُ الْحِسَابِ
Those will have a share of what they have earned, and Allah is swift in account. [Qur'an:2:202]
By 'share' here is meant a 'share' in both the good of this World and the Hereafter. Hence, one can see why this is such a tremendous supplication, as it conjoins the best of this World and the next. It thus teaches us the way of balance between pursuing our aims in this World whilst ultimately working for the next. For in reality, the World and the Hereafter are ultimately integrated, hence the Muslim is one who takes advantage of the benefit in this World, as it is the path to Paradise in the Hereafter. As Allah says:
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. [Qur'an:28:77]
The Muslim is not one who is heedless with regards to the Hereafter, unlike those whom Allah describes as:
يَعْلَمُونَ ظَاهِرًا مِنَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ عَنِ الْآخِرَةِ هُمْ غَافِلُونَ
They know what is apparent of the worldly life, but they, of the Hereafter, are unaware. [Qur'an:30:7]
Thus the Muslim is the one who endeavours in joining between works in this World whilst striving for the Hereafter, and in this manner he attains the good in both. For Allah Himself has coupled between the World and the Hereafter in their reward and His gifts therein, when He mentioned about the Prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) stating:
وَآتَيْنَاهُ أَجْرَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَإِنَّهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ لَمِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ
And We gave him his reward in this world, and indeed, he is in the Hereafter among the righteous.
Elsewhere Allah speaks about the followers of the Prophets who strove in their devotion, and in their seeking the pleasure of Allah, stating that He gave them the good of this World and the Hereafter:
فَآتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ ثَوَابَ الدُّنْيَا وَحُسْنَ ثَوَابِ الْآخِرَةِ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ
So Allah gave them the reward of this world and the good reward of the Hereafter. And Allah loves the doers of good. [Qur'an:3:148]
So given this, what exactly is the 'good' of this World and the Hereafter ?
O Servants of Allah:
Indeed the good of this World incorporates every good thing that could be desired. This includes things such as good health, wellbeing, a spacious home, expansive sustenance, beneficial knowledge, righteous work and vocation, a comfortable mode of transport, praiseworthy reputation and everything a person could desire from the good and pure of the life of this world. About these things Allah says:
قُلْ مَنْ حَرَّمَ زِينَةَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي أَخْرَجَ لِعِبَادِهِ وَالطَّيِّبَاتِ مِنَ الرِّزْقِ قُلْ هِيَ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا خَالِصَةً يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
Say, "Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?" Say, "They are for those who believe during the worldly life [but] exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection."
Likewise from the good of this World, is that a person live a noble, goodly life, full of happiness and contentment. As Allah says:
Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do. [Qur'an:16:97]
Such a life is one in which a person attains unto the excellence of this World, through the excellence of his work therein, as Allah says:
وَأَحْسِنْ كَمَا أَحْسَنَ اللَّهُ إِلَيْكَ وَلَا تَبْغِ الْفَسَادَ فِي الْأَرْضِ
And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. [Qur'an:28:77]
This is because the World itself becomes ennobled through devotion towards Allah in it, which includes the efforts of people to cultivate civilization and to strive towards its illumination through all manners of good they can exert therein.
O You who believe:
Indeed the good of the Hereafter is encompassed by Paradise. So whomsoever enters it could be said to have attained unto the entirety of goodness.
So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [unto all good].
And Paradise is from the matters of the unseen that Allah and His Messenger have informed us of and tasked us to believe in. Thus to believe in it is an obligation and to have faith and act in accordance with what is narrated about it is likewise a duty. About Paradise Allah says:
جَنَّاتِ عَدْنٍ الَّتِي وَعَدَ الرَّحْمَنُ عِبَادَهُ بِالْغَيْبِ إِنَّهُ كَانَ وَعْدُهُ مَأْتِيًّا
Gardens of perpetual residence; they will enter them with whoever were righteous among their fathers, their spouses and their descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, [saying], "Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the final home."
And even greater than this is that the believer will be in the presence and assembly of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), being in the company of the Prophets, the 'Truthful Ones', the Martyrs and the Righteous, about whom Allah says:
وَحَسُنَ أُولَئِكَ رَفِيقًا
And excellent are those as companions. [Qur'an:4:69]
And all of the good that the believer will find in Paradise will be bestowed (in its manifestation) upon his face in a form of illumination and light.
[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant * Looking at their Lord. [Qur'an:75:22-23]
So O Allah give us the good in this World, and the good in the Hereafter. And assist us all in the way of piety and obedience. Piety towards Your trustworthy Messenger, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the ability to be dutiful towards those You have commanded us to be dutiful towards, in accordance with Your words: O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. [Qur'an: 4:59]
May Allah bless me and bless you with the Noble Qur'an and with the Way (Sunnah) of His Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I say this, and I seek forgiveness for me and for you, so seek His forgiveness, for He is the All-Forgiving and the All-Merciful.
The Second Khutbah
All praises are for Allah, Lord of all the Worlds. And I bear witness, with every facet of my being, that there is nothing worthy of absolute love, adoration and worship, except Allah, the Uniquely One, having no competing second in that One-ness. And I bear witness that our Leader and Sayyid, our Prophet, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), is the perfect example of dutiful servanthood towards Allah, and is His sent Messenger unto the entirety of the created universe. O Allah: We ask you to bestow Your peace, blessings and grace upon him; his family; all of his companions; and whomsoever follows and seeks to emulate him in the best of ways till the Last Day. I advise you, O servants of Allah, and myself, with Taqwa of Allah (glorified be He).
Indeed the greatest of the good of Paradise is that the believer attains unto the pleasure of his Lord, and attains thereby unto the bliss of witnessing His noble countenance. For indeed when the people of Paradise enter unto it, they shall hear a majestic, immense, grand voice summoning them, and when they turn and face towards it, then it will be [in a manner He knows best as if] they are being addressed by their Lord, who then shall say unto them:
Do you wish Me to give you anything more? They would say: Have You not brightened our faces? Have You not made us enter Paradise and saved us from Fire?
The narrator of the Hadith then says:
He (i.e. Allah) shall then remove the veil, and of the various gifts given to them nothing would be dearer to them than that witnessing of their Lord, the Mighty and the Glorious. [Muslim]
In narrating this event, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite the verse:
لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا الْحُسْنَى وَزِيَادَةٌ
For them who have done good is the best [reward] and 'more'. [Qur'an: 10:26]
So this is the Paradise that Allah has prepared for those who have belief in it, and who have faith in Him, striving in accordance for. As Allah says:
But whoever desires the Hereafter and exerts the effort due to it while he is a believer - it is those whose effort is ever appreciated [by Allah ].
Know that the rank and degree of people in the Hereafter will be in accordance with the degree of their effort and works in the World, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
أَهْلُ الْمَعْرُوفِ فِي الدُّنْيَا؛ هُمْ أَهْلُ الْمَعْرُوفِ فِي الْآخِرَةِ
"The people of honour in this world are the people of honour in the Next World."
[Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad]
So: Let each of us strive to attain success in this World and the Hereafter.
And with this, let us send our peace and blessings upon the one we have been commanded to send our peace and blessings upon, as Allah says: Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace. [Qur'an: 33:56]. So, O Allah, bestow Your peace, blessings and grace upon our Master, our Prophet and upon his family and all of his companions. And may Allah be pleased with the Righteous Caliphs: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali; and the noble companions of the Prophet, the Sahaba, may Allah be pleased with all of them. O Allah, we ask You for soundness in our faith, and trust in good character, and a true success that will be followed by eternal bliss. O Allah, we ask You for Your mercy, for true prosperity, for Your redemptive forgiveness and Your pleasure. O Allah, make us from those who are obedient, respectful, those who venerate their parents, honoring their mothers and their fathers, embodying excellent character towards their families and wider societies.
O Allah, grant success to the UAE President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and guide him to all that is good. O Allah, we seek Your favour in granting him continued good health and care. O Allah, we also ask You to grant success to the Vice-President, the Crown Prince and his Brothers, their Highnesses, the Rulers of the Emirates.
O Allah, we ask You to forgive all of the Muslims, both the men and women, the living and dead. O Allah, bestow your mercy on the late Sheikh Zayed, Sheikh Maktoum and the other late UAE Sheikhs who have passed on to the mercy of their Lord. O Lord, grant them from your abundant mercy and bless them with Your kindness and satisfaction. O Allah, we ask you to admit them into Paradise, being given bounties therein without being taken to account. O Lord, forgive and show mercy on our parents, relatives and whosoever may have a right upon us.
O Allah, we ask You, from your loving kindness, for the immensity of your forgiveness, for the reward of all righteousness, for the safety and protection from all sin. O Allah, we ask you for the ultimate success in attaining Paradise, and the ultimate respite in being saved from the Fire. O Allah, do not allow us to sin except that You forgive us, nor to have any worry except that you relieve us therein, nor for any debt to come upon us except that You see it compensated, nor for there to be any sick amongst us except that You see them healed. Let there be no dead, except that You have covered them in Your mercy, and let there be no pressing need, amongst any of us, except that You see it met and fulfilled. O most Noble of the Noble, You are capable over all things, and You are the most generous in responding to those who call upon You.
We ask You, O Allah, the Lord of all domains, to continue blessing the UAE with stability, welfare, increase in its bounties, knowledge, civilization, happiness, beauty and tolerance. O Allah, please continue blessing it with safety and security. O Allah, have mercy on the honourable martyrs of our nation and gather them with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favour of the Prophets. O Allah, make the dwelling of the martyrs, their families, parents and relatives with the righteous. Indeed, You are ever-responsive to those who call upon You. O Allah, grant to the people of Yemen that which is good, and unite them upon that which is True and Sacred, and provide for them all manners of prosperity, O most Noble of the Noble.
O Allah, spread peace and security amongst all the Muslim nations, and the entirety of the world. O our Lord, we ask You for the best of this World, the best of the Hereafter, that You will protect us from the punishment of the Fire, and that You enter us into Your paradise with the righteous. Indeed You are the Most Generous and Most Forgiving.
O Servants of Allah: Remember Allah, the Majestic, and He will remember you. Thank Him for His blessings and He will increase you therein. And establish the prayer.
So stand up for prayer.
